HIPAA stands for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, which was passed by Congress in 1996. HITECH stands for the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act, enacted as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. HITECH updated HIPAA to include and promote the adoption and meaningful use of health information technology. When we talk about HIPAA we also include HITECH as well.
